GREG SZURNICKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Greg Szurnicki Memorial Scholarship is presented each year at the High School Awards Ceremony in June.  Greg Szurnicki was one of the founders and long-time president of the Kings Park Civic Association.  For nearly fifty years, he was a strong advocate for the residents of Kings Park, especially senior citizens and veterans.  In 2006, he was named Suffolk Senior Citizen of the Year by the Suffolk County Senior Citizens’ Advisory Board.  He was nominated for this honor by County Legislator Lynn Nowick and presented the award by County Executive Steve Levy.  This award is presented to an individual who is “and advocate, role model, leader and volunteer who has enhanced the lives of others.”  The scholarship honors that legacy of service to others.

The Kings Park Civic Association is proud to announce that the 2019 winner of the Kings Park Civic Association’s Greg Szurnicki Memorial Scholarship is Kings Park High School senior, Jace DeMarco.

Jace is an honor student who has participated in countless community activities, including the KPHS Leadership Club and mentorship of students with special needs. Jace formed a charity titled The Warming Souls Project in which he collected winter garments and distributed them to those in need. He collaborated with homeless coalitions and churches to deliver care packages to over 400 individuals who were in need of proper winter attire. Jace stated, “To make this happen actually warmed my soul.”

On behalf of the Civic Association board and membership, Jace was presented with this scholarship on June 5th during KPHS Senior Awards Night and recognized and congratulated by the civic membership at the Association’s June 20th general meeting.  Congratulations!
